Job Opportunities at WLNS

News Anchor/Reporter

WLNS-TV, the CBS affiliate in Lansing, is looking for someone to anchor our main evening newscasts and help take the station’s ratings to new heights.

But this is not just a desk job. We’re also looking with someone who has reporting chops – preferably with a background in investigative and/or beat reporting. We’ll be counting on you to make connections with sources as well as viewers and lead the newscasts as well as anchor them.

Besides chemistry with our existing anchors, we’re looking for someone who works well with others, who can serve as a newsroom leader, and who enjoys mentoring producers and reporters.

We are an award-winning station dedicated to high quality local news. We’re a state capital, we’re home to Michigan State University, and we’ve got several GM plants and suppliers here – so we’re an excellent news town with lots of sports, arts, culture, and a good quality of life.

A degree in journalism or a related field is required. So is significant newsroom experience – both behind the desk and in the field. Excellent news judgment and superior writing skills are a must.

Applicants should find and fill out the form at www.mediageneral.com/careers. You should also send an e-mail with your resume and a link to your tape to newsdirector@wlns.com with the subject line “Anchor job.”

Reporter/VideoJournalist – Full Time

WLNS-TV, the CBS affiliate in Lansing, Michigan, seeks a bulldog.

We want someone who wants to find and break big stories and lead the newscast every day. Being a great story finder is as important as being a great storyteller.

We want someone with superior writing skills - who can tell stories in a clear and compelling way - and who understands that way isn't always a straight package.

We want someone who is inquisitive, resourceful, and understands the importance of relationships.

This position is for our Jackson bureau. Jackson is the second biggest city in our market and about 45 minutes south of Lansing.

When you need a photographer or a live truck, we’ll send one down. But most of the time, you’ll be a VJ – shooting, writing, and editing your own stuff.

But you won’t be alone. You’ll be based out of the headquarters of the Jackson Citizen Patriot, the paper of record in Jackson, so you’ll work alongside other journalists. (And of course, you’ll be in daily contact with the staff in Lansing.)

This job is NOT about taking the paper’s big story and doing the TV version of it. Quite the contrary: we want someone who will force the paper to copy off of you.

As the only TV reporter who will work (and perhaps live) in Jackson full-time, you will also be the station’s ambassador at occasional public events.

A degree in journalism or related field is required. So is shooting, editing, and newsroom experience.

If this sounds like the right opportunity for you, find and fill out the form at www.mediageneral.com/careers. No phone calls, snail mail, or DVDs. Also send your resume, cover letter, and links to your work to newsdirector@wlns.com with the subject line "Jackson Bureau reporter"

Bonus points for a cover letter that tells us how you found and enterprised a story.

Weekend Producer/Weekday Reporter (part-time)

Do you love to write? Torn between wanting to tell one good story or put together one great show? Still trying to figure out whether to be a producer or a reporter? Well WLNS-TV, the CBS affiliate in Lansing, Michigan, has the perfect job for you.

We’re looking for someone who can put together great shows on the weekend and break great stories on the weekdays.

You’ll produce the 6 & 11pm shows on Saturday and Sunday and report two days a week. This is a part-time position.

We want someone with superior writing skills – someone who can tell stories in a clear and compelling way – whether that’s putting together a package during the week or putting together the first segment of the newscast.

A degree in journalism or related field is required. So is shooting, editing, and newsroom experience.

We are an award-winning station that's dedicated to excellence. We are home to the state capital, a Big Ten university, and two General Motors plants. Because of that, we've got more news, sports, arts, and culture than markets much bigger than ours.

No phone calls, snail mail, or DVDs. Send your resume, cover letter, and links to your work to newsdirector@wlns.com with the subject line "Producer/Reporter position" and fill out an application at www.mediageneral.com.
