Federal prosecutor seeks reports of mosque spying

Associated Press - April 30, 2009 5:24 PM ET

DEARBORN, Mich. (AP) - The top federal prosecutor in Detroit is encouraging Muslims to report allegations the FBI hired informants to infiltrate mosques and spy on leaders and worshippers.

U.S. Attorney Terrence Berg told Arab- and Muslim-American community leaders during a round-table discussion today that he hasn't been told of such allegations. But he said his office takes allegations of domestic spying "extremely seriously."

Andrew Arena, who heads the FBI's Detroit office, says the complaints haven't been brough to his attention, either. He says it's disappointing because he's been working with community groups and trying to improve relationships with local Arabs and Muslims.
