Campgrounds, RV parks spend green to go 'green'

Associated Press - May 24, 2009 9:54 AM ET

HOPKINS TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) - Don't look now, but your local campground may be going green.

Encouraged by the National Association of RV Parks and Campgrounds' green-parks initiative launched two years ago, an increasing number of campgrounds are making investments aimed at saving water and energy.

Some campgrounds are utilizing solar energy to warm pool water, while others are replacing propane heating systems with wood-burning stoves fueled by lawn and tree clippings. Some are installing geothermal heating and cooling systems.

President and chief executive Linda Profaizer says her group's research indicates consumers enjoy visiting "environmentally friendly" campsites. She says that further provides an economic incentive for parks to get involved in green initiatives.
