LINDEN, Mich. (AP) - Payne Gniewek of Trenton and Joseph Juszczyk of Dearborn Heights are tied at 5-under 66 after the first round of the Michigan Amateur golf tournament played at Spring Meadows Country Club in Linden.
The pair hold a two-stroke lead Tuesday over Steve Cuzzort of Grosse Ile and Michael Zoerhoff of Caledonia in the event's 98th running.
Four players are clustered at 2-under 69 - Joe Carroll of Royal Oak, Phil Gieseker of Saline, Jerry Gunthorpe of Ovid and Martin Jeppesen of Ann Arbor.
The field of 156 will be cut to the top 64 scorers after Round 2 of stroke play Wednesday. Match play runs Thursday through Saturday.
