Kildee secures $3.4M for Saginaw River dredging

Associated Press - October 8, 2009 5:34 PM ET

BAY CITY, Mich. (AP) - U.S. Rep. Dale Kildee, D-Flint, has secured more than $3.4 million in federal funding for dredging the Saginaw River and related work.

The Flint Democrat says the funding will help make critical infrastructure upgrades and improve transportation and shipping in the region.

The Saginaw River Channel is a federally authorized commercial navigation project. Maintenance dredging is required for navigation to continue at maximum efficiency on the river.

The dredging of silt from the river's navigation channel between Bay City and Saginaw is meant to benefit shipping companies forced to lighten their loads in past years because of low water levels and the shallow channel.

The Bay City Times says Kildee has secured $16.7 million for the project since 2004.
