LANSING, Mich. (AP) - Lt. Gov. John Cherry leads his fellow Democrats, but doesn't fare as well against potential GOP competitors in a new Michigan governor's race poll.
Lansing-based EPIC-MRA says 33% of those polled would vote for or lean toward Cherry among Democratic candidates for governor in next year's race. State Rep. Alma Wheeler Smith was the pick of 5%.
When pitted directly against Republican candidates, Cherry trailed Attorney General Mike Cox 45 to 30%. Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard was slightly ahead of Cherry 39 to 31 as was U.S. Rep. Pete Hoekstra 40 to 33%.
The poll of 600 state voters was conducted Oct. 11-15 for The Detroit News, WXYZ-TV, WOOD-TV, WILX-TV and WJRT-TV. It has a 4%age point margin of sampling error.
