MASON, Mich. (AP) - A judge has ruled a Lansing man accused of driving drunk and causing a crash that killed a woman and her son is competent to stand trial.
Daniel Burwell is charged with two counts of second-degree murder in the deaths of 46-year-old Sylvia Porter and 17-year-old Major Washington Jr.
Authorities say Burwell was drunk when he ran a red light April 20 at more than 60 mph and slammed his pickup into the victims' car.
The 27-year-old had been ordered to undergo competency testing.
The Lansing State Journal was unable to reach Burwell's attorney, G. Michael Hocking, for comment on Wednesday. He has said the evidence against his client doesn't show willful disregard, a necessary element in a second-degree murder charge.
No trial date has been set.
