DETROIT (AP) - Federal prosecutors in Detroit are asking a judge to dismiss an indictment against the national president of a motorcycle club, the Devil's Diciples.
In a court filing, Assistant U.S. Attorney Matthew Schneider says the case should be dismissed to "avoid compromising an ongoing investigation." He didn't elaborate.
Jeff Smith of Mount Clemens was charged earlier this year with possessing body armor, which is illegal for some ex-convicts. A message seeking comment was left with his lawyer Tuesday.
In May, a Macomb County judge retired after his house and the New Baltimore courthouse were searched. At the time, Paul Cassidy said the FBI wanted to know if he gave special treatment to Smith, an old pal, and members of the Devil's Diciples.
Cassidy denied it.
