Small plane crashes after landing on interstate

Associated Press - October 27, 2009 8:24 PM ET

VANDERBILT, Mich. (AP) - State police say the pilot and a passenger were injured when their small plane crashed while attempting to land on Interstate 75 in northern Michigan.

Sgt. Jeff Gorno says from the Gaylord post that the two-seat plane crashed shortly before 6:30 p.m. Tuesday on a shoulder of the northbound lanes of I-75 near Vanderbilt, about 235 miles north of Detroit. He said the occupants' identities and their conditions weren't immediately available.

Gorno says police aren't sure where the plane was headed, but it's registered at Gaylord Regional Airport, 10 miles southeast of the crash site. He says witnesses reported seeing the plane flying erratically before the crash.
