School bus inspections end statewide on Saturday

Associated Press - October 30, 2009 4:14 AM ET

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (AP) - School bus inspections across Michigan are coming to a halt.

The final inspections will be held Saturday, when layoff notices given 11 vehicle safety inspectors become effective.

Michigan State Police are required by law to conduct annual inspections of school buses. But the school aid budget recently passed by the Legislature eliminates the $1.4 million set aside for inspections.

State police spokeswoman Shannon Banner tells WOOD-TV in Grand Rapids that the Michigan Constitution prevents the agency from spending money that hasn't been appropriated.

Schools still will be required to make the inspections, but will have to come up with the cash from other areas of their budget.
