Fate of Governor's Inn

Posted:

A south Lansing motel closed its doors earlier this year, and ever since then the Governor's Inn has been falling apart. Now it's set to come down for good. You can see the Governor's Inn sign as you get off I-96. Get a little closer and it doesn't get any prettier- peeling paint, broken windows and old mattresses sit out back. On a rainy day, it's all that's left of the failed motel causing problems in south Lansing.

Virg Bernero, Mayor of Lansing: "There's crime, there's issues with under occupancy."

For the past 9 months, windows have been boarded up, but now they're coming down and a new burger is coming to town. Sonic is finally in Lansing. It's a two million dollar redevelopment project bringing more than limemades and tater tots to mid-Michigan.

Virg Bernero: "New jobs, that's the great thing about it."

The mayor says it will bring 60 new jobs to the area, plus construction jobs needed to tear down the inn.

Virg Bernero: "We have an aggressive schedule. We hope to have it down by the end of the year."

They still need local and state brownfield incentive approval, but Sonic executives expect a busy grand opening in early spring of 2010.

Bill Wentworth, Jr., Vice President of Sonic: "We've had lines up to two hours long, people waiting to get in."

Vice president of Sonic, Bill Wentworth Jr., says he hopes those lines form in Lansing and people we talked to say they're eager to jump in.

Courtney Kenyon, Lansing resident: "You see all those commercials with the food and the drinks, and now I'll finally be able to try it."

City officials say Sonic is the perfect replacement to one of Lansing's biggest eyesores.

Virg Bernero: "This product wasn't delivering what the drive by public was looking for."

So they are hoping a drive in does.
