State budget cuts have taken a toll on school districts across Michigan. Officials with Grand Ledge public schools will reveal what effect funding cuts will have on their district. Superintendent Steve Matthews is unveiling this new restructuring plan. It's been in the works for almost 16 months. Grand Ledge schools have really been hit hard by the school funding crisis. They have almost 2 million dollars less in revenue than last year, not to mention the 1.9 million they cut from their budget just last June, so desperate times are calling for desperate measures.
Right now Matthews is announcing transportation service cuts, school closures and consolidations and the downsizing of district personnel, so expect layoffs- Tough decisions that haven't been easy for the superintendent.
Steve Matthews, Grand Ledge Superintendent: "It's very difficult, you know I've had to have conversations with people here in my office about what their future is in the district. They are not easy conversations to have with people when you know you are affecting their lives, their livelihood, so those are very difficult conversations and we'll continue to have those conversations as we move forward."
The superintendent is expected to speak until 7pm. Community members will then get a chance to react to the plan.
