Prosecutors: Mich. woman stole $20K from relative

Associated Press - November 5, 2009 9:54 AM ET

FLINT, Mich. (AP) - Authorities say a 43-year-old Genesee Township woman faces charges after she stole upward of $20,000 from her mentally disabled great uncle to pay her cable bill and have her lawn mowed.

Mary Anne Aitken was charged Wednesday with 22 counts of embezzlement from a vulnerable adult and uttering and publishing.

Prosecutors tell The Flint Journal that Aitken used the money to pay cable and towing bills, and give "big bucks" to her son for lawn care. Meanwhile, her 79-year-old great uncle was kicked out of a Flint assisted living facility in January for an unpaid $18,000 bill.

The Journal reports the man is now in a new adult foster care facility and under the care of a court-appointed guardian.

Aitken remains in the Genesee County Jail on $1.1 million bond. She does not have a lawyer.
