New Info. on Fort Hood Massacre

Posted:

New information emerges in the wake of a deadly shooting at Fort Hood, Texas. The death toll now stands at sixteen following the rampage at the largest military base in the US. Hours after the killing spree, there's more questions than answers regarding the motives of 39-year-old Army Major Mali Nadal Hasan, a medical doctor and psychiatrist. The Army says Hasan was doing his job at a soldier readiness center on base when he suddenly opened fire.

Soldiers on the base described it as a scene of chaos and carnage, a war zone at Fort Hood. Some witnesses say that Hasan shouted out "Allahu Akbar," an Arabic phrase for "God is great," before he started shooting. They add that dozens of soldiers were lined up in that readiness center, all of them unarmed as the attack went down, and that as some escaped outside. Hasan followed them and kept right on firing.

Amidst the horror were stories of courage and loss. A civilian police officer, Sgt. Kimberly Munley, stopped the bullets, shooting Hasan four times. She was wounded herself. Hasan is reportedly in a coma, on life support. Sgt. Munley is in stable condition.

There was a moment of silence on the base to remember the victims. President Obama has ordered the flags on all government and public building flown at half staff through Veteran's Day to honor those who lost their lives at Fort Hood.

A Lansing man was there when it all took place. Army Private Ray Saucedo was headed into the center when the shots were fired. He fell during the attack and injured his arm. 6 News spoke with his wife. She says they got a chance to see each other for a few minutes and says her husband went back at work.
