FLINT, Mich. (AP) - A Flint father says he filed a false police report that led to an Amber Alert because he thought it would prompt a quicker response to his stolen car.
Police say the man reported that his 7-month-old son was inside the vehicle when it was stolen Monday afternoon from a high school parking lot in Flint, about 55 miles northwest of Detroit.
Authorities immediately issued an Amber Alert.
Surveillance video from the school later revealed that the boy and the car were never at the school. The child was found safe inside an apartment in Burton, in the care of relatives.
The man tells WNEM-TV that he takes responsibility for not getting the situation under control.
No charges have been filed.
An investigation by police and Child Protective Services is ongoing.
