The Michigan Senate is welcoming a new lawmaker to fill the seat of an ex-member who was elected to Congress. Republican Mike Nofs of Battle Creek was sworn in. Michigan Supreme Court Justice Robert Young administered the oath of office. Nofs, a former state representative, easily won a special election last week over Democratic State Rep. Martin Griffin of Jackson. Nofs says it was a tough campaign and he is thankful for the opportunity to serve in the Senate. The victory gives the GOP a 22-16 advantage in the Senate. The seat was vacated in January by Democrat Mark Schauer, who was elected to Congress. The 19th District covers Calhoun County and much of Jackson County.
