Ex-Holland city attorney faces sex assault charge

Associated Press - November 19, 2009 5:54 PM ET

HOLLAND, Mich. (AP) - The former deputy city attorney in Holland has been charged with offering to reduce a woman's drunken driving charge in exchange for sex.

Carl Gabrielse (GAY'-bree-ehls) turned himself in at the Ottawa County Sheriff's Department on Thursday morning. He was arraigned before Grand Haven District Judge Richard Kloote on charges of third-degree criminal sexual conduct and misconduct in public office.

The 30-year-old Gabrielse was released on a personal bond. A telephone listing for him wasn't available.

Authorities say the 21-year-old Zeeland woman has taken out a personal protection order against Gabrielse. The criminal case against her remains pending.

If convicted of the sex charge, Gabrielse faces up to 15 years in prison. He has been fired from his position in Holland.
