TRENTON, Mich. (AP) - A wetlands restoration project at the Detroit River International Wildlife Refuge has been completed.
Democratic U.S. Rep. John Dingell of Michigan and Wayne County Executive Robert Ficano plan to celebrate the project on Wednesday at the gateway to the refuge in the Detroit suburb of Trenton.
The Monguagon (MAHNG'-weh-gahn) Creek project has recreated six acres of wetlands in an area that lost most of its wetlands to development. It's part of an effort to naturally filter stormwater destined for the Detroit River.
The project also is expected to create new wildlife habitat and opportunities for environmental education.
The refuge encompasses islands, wetlands and other protected habitats along the Detroit River and Lake Erie.
