Michigan reduces cross-country ski trail grooming

Associated Press - December 24, 2009 4:14 AM ET

LANSING, Mich. (AP) - The Michigan Department of Natural Resources is cutting back on grooming of cross-country ski trails in state forests.

The state has 23 cross-country ski trails in the Upper Peninsula and northern Lower Peninsula, but only eight will be fully groomed this season. Parking lots at cross-country ski trailheads will be plowed.

The eight trails that will be groomed include Blueberry Ridge in Marquette County; Paradise in Chippewa County; Chippewa Hills and Norway Ridge trails in Alpena County; and Vasa in Grand Traverse County.

Also groomed will be Ogemaw Hills in Ogemaw County; Black Mountain in Presque Isle County; and Cadillac in Wexford County.

Trails also will be groomed at 22 of 98 state parks and recreation areas. All allow cross-country skiing.
