2 Flint-area arenas sold at foreclosure auction

Associated Press - December 31, 2009 8:24 AM ET

FLINT, Mich. (AP) - Officials say two mid-Michigan ice arenas will remain open despite their foreclosure sale.

Standard Insurance Co. on Wednesday purchased the Perani Arena & Event Center in Flint for $4 million and Iceland arena in Clayton Township for $3.5 million during a Genesee County sheriff's auction. Standard says companies controlled by former Flint Generals owner Dr. Khaled Shukairy defaulted on mortgages.

Shukairy, his attorney and Brandon Bordeaux, a representative of the International Hockey League's Generals, could not immediately be reached for comment.

Ingrid A. Jensen, an attorney for Standard, tells The Flint Journal that Shukairy has six months to redeem the properties.

Perani serves as the Generals' home, and Iceland offers public skating. Both venues offer skating shows.
