MARSHALL, Mich. (AP) - Michigan biologists say relatively few fish have been killed because of an oil spill in the Kalamazoo River.
But the fish are not out of danger. A larger fish kill is possible within a week or so because oxygen levels in the water could drop and aquatic life that the fish eat have been devastated by the spill.
Officials with the Michigan Department of Natural Resources and Environment are surveying the river Friday.
The leak detected Monday came from a pipeline owned by Calgary, Alberta-based Enbridge Inc. The Environmental Protection Agency estimates more than 1 million gallons of oil may have been spilled.
Company and federal officials say they don't believe the oil will reach Lake Michigan, where the Kalamazoo River empties.
