Young People Rally For Cleaner, Greener Jobs

Posted:

Hundreds of young people gather in Lansing to push for clean energy.

The National Power Shift summit is underway in the capital city.

And as Jessica Maki tells us, those involved are banding together to make their voices heard.

They've come from all parts of the nation to the capital city with one goal in mind.

Jessy Tolkan, National Energy Action Coalition: "We demand a clean and just energy bill passed in 2009. It's time to bring clean energy jobs to Michigan."

To make that statement heard, several of them have come together to organize Michigan's Power Shift summit, in hopes the state can move into a cleaner future.

Derrell Slaughter Co-Founder, Green Nation: "Where else can you get this many young people that engaged and enthused about green jobs."

Jessy Tolkan, National Energy Action Coalition: "If we can transition from a dirty energy economy to a clean energy economy, that means bringing jobs back to Michigan, it means re-building manufacturing in the rust belt of this country and taking America back to a place of prosperity."

Jessy Tolkan runs the National Energy Action Coalition.

She says this is one of eleven summits around the nation.

And these events prove young people want clean energy, but the shift can't be done without them.

Jessy Tolkan, National Energy Action Coalition: "They're the largest most diverse generation in American history, so they're important politically because they turn out and vote and really they have the most at stake."

They're fighting for a cause they believe in now, in hopes of a cleaner, greener tomorrow. As part of the summit, hundreds will march Sunday for clean jobs.

The rally starts at 10:30 a.m. outside the Lansing Center and ends at the state Capitol.
