UPDATE: Heat forcing schools to close early, delay football games

UPDATE 12:15 p.m. - The high temperatures are causing some extra efforts to be taken in the Lansing School District to keep students and teachers as comfortable as possible. The district sent out a Facebook post explaining what was being done.

Shortly after noon the district announced that due to the warm temperatures and humidity, the Eastern vs. East Lansing (@ Sexton) game and Everett vs. Holt (@ Everett ) game will start at 7:30 pm tonight, instead of the scheduled 7:00 p.m. kickoffs.

These two games and another three high school football games will have 7:30 pm kick-offs.

This policy for managing heat and humidity will be followed over the next 72 hours for all high school sports, not just football. Plus, John Johnson with the Michigan High School Athletic Association says athletic officials will be monitoring conditions closely at each event.

"School will have devices that they will use at field levels to determine what is the index right at the point where the game is being played. They will not depend on anything they get from the airport or the internet, they will take their own measurements at the sights to help them plan for what they should be doing tonight in terms of hydration and stopping games if necessary to give water breaks."

Parents and anyone else planning to attend outdoor sporting events are encouraged to bring something that'll keep them cool and to drink plenty of water.

(WLNS) - The first day of fall is refusing to give up summer and that's causing problems for some mid-Michigan school districts.

StormTracker 6 meteorologist Emily Wahls is expecting the high temperature to reach 93 degrees in this area today.

When humidity is factored in the area could see heat indexes well into the upper 90s.

In Jackson County three school districts will be closing early due to the heat.

The Concord High School football game scheduled for tonight is now set to kickoff at 7:30.

Hanover-Horton High School has also pushed back the football game to 7:30 because of the heat.
