EAST LANSING, Mich (WLNS) – A hacker has gained access to university records that include the names, Social Security numbers and MSU identification numbers of up to 400,000 current and former students and employees.
This includes faculty, staff and students who were employed by MSU between 1970 and November 13, 2016, or were students between 1991 and 2016.
They say the information does not contain passwords or financial, academic, contact or health information.
While MSU says there's no evidence the hackers took all the records, they're reaching out to the 400,000 people who might be affected to offer free credit monitoring.
Police are also asking everyone to keep a close eye on their credit and watch out for possible cases of identity theft. If something happens, they're asking you to contact MSU Police and reference and incident report #1658103881.
If you have questions about the breach, MSU has set up a website and a hotline. That number is 1-855-231-9331.
