Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is a noninvasive medical test that helps physicians diagnose and treat medical conditions, without the use of ionizing radiation. MR Imaging uses a powerful magnetic field, radio frequency pulses and a computer to produce detailed pictures of organs, soft tissues, bone and virtually all other internal body structures, making MRI especially useful in neurological (brain), musculoskeletal, cardiovascular, and oncological (cancer) imaging.

Magnetic Resonance Imaging is a relatively new technology. The first MR study performed on a human took place in 1977. In 1985, MSU Radiology installed the 2nd MRI scanner in Michigan. MSU Radiology was the first service provider to offer both 1.5 and 3.0 Tesla scanning to the mid-Michigan area and continues to offer state-of-the-art technology seven days a week.
