UPDATE: Police Say Grand Rapids Gunman Used Cocaine

Posted: Updated:

Police say a gunman who fatally shot seven people in Michigan used cocaine and alcohol.

Chief Kevin Belk says he doesn't know what prompted Rodrick Shonte Dantzler to shoot three people Thursday at one house in Grand Rapids and four at another, including two ex-girlfriends and his 12-year-old daughter.

Belk says Dantzler took cocaine and alcohol in the hours after his shooting spree but before killing himself.

Dantzler's criminal history stretches beyond Thursday's deadly rampage. His criminal record spans nearly two decades, as far back as 1992.

According to our CBS affiliate in Kalamazoo, WWMT-TV, Dantzler has had four other run ins with the law. In 1992, when he was just a juvenile, Dantzler was charged with breaking and entering. Five years later, he pleaded guilty to malicious destruction of property, and was placed on probation.

Then in 2000, Dantzler pleaded guilty to felony assault and served three years in prison. Just last year, Dantzler pleaded guilty to assault and battery and spent about a year behind bars.

At this point, that is the extent of Dantzler's criminal history, as far as we know.
