Less Funding Leaves Elderly Struggling

Posted:

Many social programs are facing legislative cuts and there is less help available for those struggling to make ends meet.

Across the state 37% of senior citizens are in financial trouble according to a new report released today by Wayne State University.

This the new seniors count report. It takes a detailed look at just how many of Michigan's senior citizens are struggling to pay for basic necessities such as food, housing, and healthcare.

Here in mid-Michigan the number of seniors living in poverty is about one out of every three. In Ingham County it's just under 32%. In Eaton and Clinton County it's just under 29. In Jackson County the number of seniors struggling to make ends meet jumps to almost 38%. @

"When they don't have enough income to make ends meet they are financially in a great deal of hardship. They don't have any extra money to cover those unexpected costs of home repairs, car repairs, or even simple pleasures like going out to eat once in awhile," says Kate White, the Executive Director of Elder Law of Michigan.

Report findings show that women and senior citizens of color are struggling the most financially.  @@@
