Deputies Investigate Fatal Crash in Jackson County

Posted: Updated:

In Jackson County, sheriff's officials are investigating a fatal car crash. It happened around 6:30 a.m. Tuesday on Eastbound I-94 near Race Road.

The accident caused traffic to be backed up by about 5 miles, and the road didn't reopen until 1:00 in the afternoon.

Two semi trucks were involved in the accident. The Jackson County Sheriff's Department says one semi was stopped, or possibly moving slowly in the left lane, when a second semi rear-ended it. The driver of that semi, 61-year-old David Lawson, from southwest Michigan, was killed.

The area where the accident happened is in a construction zone and Sheriff Steve Rand says this accident, combined with a fatal motorcycle accident in that same area last week, proves it can be a very dangerous stretch of road.

"It's confusing for some people. And it's also a point at which people need to slow down. The speed limit is 45 through a construction zone. You've got heavy equipment coming and going. And there are periodic stoppages to allow equipment to pass. So people just need to be mindful of that and slow down when they enter a construction zone," said Sheriff Rand.

That part of I-94 was closed for around 7 hours Tuesday. The driver of the other semi was not injured.

"It's unknown at this time whether it was related to the construction activity, or whether there was vehicle problems, but that's what the investigation will conclude," said Sheriff Steve Rand, Jackson County.

But either way Rand says with the construction drivers need to be even more cautious.
