Return to team

Maria Hechanova joined the 6 News team in August 2011. She moved more than 2,000 miles across the country from Arizona to Michigan and is excited to learn about the Midwest!

Prior to 6 News, Maria worked for KYMA News 11, the NBC affiliate in Yuma, AZ for nearly two years. She started as a producer/multimedia journalist and worked her way up to morning anchor. She covered a wide range of stories from drug seizures at the border to heartwarming military homecomings. She even got the chance to ride in a jet with the Blue Angels.

While in college, Maria interned with NBC's TODAY Show in New York City and KPHO-TV CBS 5 News in Phoenix.

Maria grew up in Glendale, AZ and graduated from Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff where she was a Division I student-athlete on the women's swimming & diving team. Go Lumberjacks!

In her free time, she likes to coach and swim. Maria is also an active member of the Asian American Journalists Association. If you have any story ideas or just want to say hi, send her an e-mail at mhechanova@wlns.com.
