Bio-Based Manufacturing May Boost Michigan's Economy

Posted:

Agriculture is the state's second largest industry. US Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack and senator Debbie Stabenow believe bio-based manufacturing holds the key to Michigan's economic future.

Vilsack and Stabenow were at Lansing's Michigan Biotechnology Institute earlier this afternoon. The Agriculture secretary and Michigan's junior senator saw firsthand how MBI and Michigan State University have teamed to speed up research in biotechnology.

The partnership is designed to bring renewable fuels, plastics and chemicals to the marketplace quicker. Both leaders pin some of the state's economic fortunes on expanding bio-based research.

"One out of four Michigan jobs in agriculture. One out of three jobs in manufacturing. When you put it together, and we can do bio-based manufacturing and new options on biofuels. It's a very exciting way for us to create jobs," said senator Debbie Stabenow on Monday.

Senator Stabenow and secretary Vilsack held a forum with farmers in Grand Rapids.
