A Michigan State Police trooper is in critical condition after an accident alongside I-96 and now police are asking for the public's help.
Investigators say 27-year-old trooper Drew Spencer was hit by another driver during a routine traffic stop Sunday night. He remains listed in critical condition at the University of Michigan hospital.
Trooper Spencer is an East Lansing native. He graduated from the Michigan State Trooper Recruit School in May and works out of the Lansing post.
Police say Spencer was out of his vehicle when he was hit on I-96 between the Fowlerville and Webberville exits. Police say a 49-year-old man from Novi was driving in a Chevy Malibu when he lost control, crossed the travel lanes and hit Trooper Spencer.
"We would ask for the public's help, any witnesses that may have seen this crash and not yet spoken to law enforcement. We do encourage motorists to be aware of the move-over law not only for the officer's safety but also for their safety," said Inspector Jim Shaw, MSP.
Police say the driver who hit the trooper was taken to Sparrow Hospital for treatment and was then released.
If you have information that can help with the investigation call MSP at 517-382-1909.
