Fate of MIS 9/11 Blood Drive In Question

Posted:

There is concern about one of the area's largest blood drives. The mid-Michigan chapter of the American Red Cross plans to hold a 9/11 blood drive on Sunday.

Last year this event was one of the most successful in the nation. But with many Red Cross workers on strike there is concern over staffing for Sunday's event.

Regardless, The Michigan International Speedway tells 6 News they plan to host the annual 9/11 Spirit of America event on Sunday, but it's still up in the air if the blood drive portion of the ceremony will take place.

More than 200 Red Cross workers have been on strike since Wednesday.

Red Cross spokesperson Janet Kranz says she's not sure who will staff the event. She hopes the Red Cross can still conduct the blood drive along with the 9/11 tribute.

The Red Cross says Friday that negotiations are in the works but there's no clear word yet on how they'll be able to accommodate all the donation appointments. The Red Cross says the event is fully booked with appointments.

Last year, the Red Cross collected almost 1,400 units of blood, the largest amount in the country.
