ELFD Urges Residents to Replace Smoke Detectors More Than 10 Years Old

Posted:

The East Lansing Fire Department (ELFD) urges residents to replace smoke detectors more than 10 years old.

Since 1999, smoke detectors have been stamped with the date of manufacture. If detectors are more than 10 years old they must be replaced.

According to East Lansing Fire Marshal Bob Pratt, "Replacing smoke detectors more than 10 years old is a small price to pay for fire safety. A working smoke detector doubles your chance of surviving a house fire. Like many other products around the home, smoke detectors are not designed to last forever. They lose their efficiency and operability over time and after 10 years they are no longer reliable."

Homes should have a working smoke detector on every level, outside of each bedroom and in every sleeping area. Hearing-impaired people need specially designed smoke detectors that will wake them with strobe lights or vibrations in case of fire.

For questions about selection, placement or maintenance of smoke detectors please contact the ELFD Fire Prevention Bureau at (517) 332-1956.
