Local U.S. Postal Workers Rally At Capitol

Posted: Updated:

Local workers are among those across the country rallying Tuesday in an effort to save the U.S. Postal Service.

Members of 4 postal employee unions plan to attend rallies in Lansing and Jackson Tuesday afternoon. They're calling on U.S. Lawmakers to pass legislation they say would pre-fund future retiree health benefits. They claim the postal service isn't broke and congress can easily solve its money problems.

The rallies come nearly two weeks after the U.S. Postal Service announced it may close nearly 250 processing facilities. They will be conducting a study to see how things are running at several USPS locations. Depending on the outcome of the study, nearly 30,000 people could be out of a job nationwide.

Local postal workers held a rally at the state capitol. Postal workers were also in front of congressman Tim Walberg's office in Jackson Tuesday.

A spokesperson from the USPS said the study is underway and it's to early to tell what the outcome will be.
