18-year-old Shares Her Inspiring Survival Story

Posted:

It's been said, the March of Dimes does amazing work, helping to improve the lives of children born with severe health challenges.

Laura Bone, is one of those children.

"She was born just under four pounds at St. Lawrence and when she was born we knew there was a problem with her heart, so less than 24 hours they took her over to Sparrow and they put her in the NICU and she dropped down to 2 pounds 10 ounces, which if you take a little bag of 5 pound sugar it fits in your hand that's how I put it in perspective for people," said Mike Bone, Laura's father.

"When I was first born I had a hole in my heart, so I've had three open heart surgeries to repair that and I needed a trache. I've been in a coma, I've been on life support seven times. I also have a pace maker and I've had nine pace maker surgeries," said Laura Bone.

Laura is now 18 years old, a senior at Haslett High School.

"I think back and I can't even believe I've been through what I've been through," said Laura.

"She had every complication, every infection that you can think of with the exception of her dying that has happened to her but she's here today, she's a fighter and God kept her here for a reason and she's an incredible little girl, or I should say young woman!" said Laura's father.

Laura Bone knows there is a reason she's here.

"Oh yeah, I want to make a difference in the world and I've set goals so that I will make that difference, " said Laura.

One of those goals she accomplished when she was 16 years old. She set up the Laura Marie Pediatric Fund. She wants to help kids who are going through what she went through and to make it easier on their families.

She also has some words of advice for those special kids, "Never give up, no matter how hard it gets and the whole worlds against you, keep going because it will be worth it!"
