Fallen Jackson Officer Receives Bravery Badge

Posted: Updated: Dec 19, 2011 05:14 AM EST

A Jackson police officer killed in the line of duty received a special honor Friday. In March of last year a man shot and killed Officer James Bonneau while he was out on a call.

It's been 21 months since the Jackson police department and community lost Officer Bonneau.

"In that time I've asked myself numerous times, why? I came up with various answers that really never eased my mind. It's been a roller coaster of emotions, and today I'm at the point where I focus on the celebrations of Jim's life," said Chief Matt Heins, JPD.

Officer Bonneau was with Jackson Police Department for 3 years.

"The pain subsides a little, but he's always in our hearts and there's a big hole," said Marc Bonneau, James Bonneau's Father.

Friday, people came to honor James with the Congressional Badge of Bravery, given only to 20 officers nationwide since its creation in 2008.

"It's just wonderful he's remembered this way. We're always happy when people remember what he gave," said Amy Bonneau, James Bonneu's mother.

The honor is bittersweet for the Bonneau family.

"He wanted to just do his job and go on doing his job, but it's nice they recognize it this way. I just hate what he had to do to get this honor," said Marc Bonneau.

While the award reminds the Bonneaus of what they lost, they want it to also be a symbol of his fellow officers' bravery.

"They face what Jim faced. Every car they go to, every door they knock on to answer a call, could be the same for them. Yet, they do it every day. They've just been so supportive and so amazing. They're just a wonderful group of people," said Amy Bonneau.

Because of Bonneau's actions, Officer Darin McIntosh, who was also shot that day, survived. Our media partners at the Jackson Citizen Patriot talked with him Friday. To read his story head on over to their website mlive.com/jackson.
