4 Mid-Michigan Doctors to be Arraigned

Posted:

The arraignment of four Mid-Michigan doctors is scheduled Tuesday in a Federal Court in Grand Rapids. The doctors are being accused of violating a federal anti-kickback statute.

The statue prohibits individuals from accepting or soliciting kickbacks in exchange of referring someone a service.

Health care programs, such as Medicare or Medicaid, could then be used to reimburse these services.  Kickback charges carry a five year prison penalty in addition with a $250,000 dollar fine.

The local doctors accused of accepting the kickbacks are: Dr. Niti Thakur of Lansing Rheumatology, Dr. Muhammad Rals of Dewitt, Dr. Andre Smith of Optimum Health Clinic in Lansing and Babu-Bhai Rathod of Okemos who practices in Mount Pleasant.
