Tuesday morning a car accident took a young man's life. It happened just after 4 a.m. on Monroe Street at the bridge, which crosses the Grand River.
Officials have identified the victim of Tuesday morning's fatal accident as 23-year-old Ryan Lennox of Michigan Center.
Jackson Police say Lennox was the driver. Officials say he was driving westbound on Monroe Street when his car veered off the side of the road and crashed into the bridge. The front part of his car actually fell off into the river. The other part stayed on the side of the street.
"The vehicle hit the bridge on the driver side so it looks like the vehicle lost control. It wasn't a head-on impact. The driver was still in the vehicle when we arrived. He was pronounced dead on scene. The wrecker companies were able to extract [the car] from the river rather quickly after we arrived on scene. It's just a challenge because it's a single vehicle ax and obviously with the driver deceased, you don't have any witnesses or anyone to interview to give you an idea as you start the investigation as to what occurred," said Deputy Chief John Holda, Jackson Police Department.
Officials say Lennox was the only one in the car at the time of the accident. Nobody else was injured. They also say speed played a factor. The posted speed in the area is 25 mph and officials say this is only the 5th accident to occur in the area over the past 13 months.
