Healing from the heart - that's the mission and message of Sierra Rose Farms in Dewitt. The farm is impacting local at-risk kids in both a major and miniature way.
For one group of Lansing students, filling up the farm is a field trip they always look forward to. Partly because their classroom is an activities barn, but mostly because their teacher is Daisy the miniature horse.
"It's incredible to see them transform," said Leeann Hull.
Hull runs the How to be a Leader in your Herd program. It brings in kids facing troubles with bullying, their parents and other personal issues. It helps them heal through horse therapy.
"Horses mirror how people inside are...we're able to do activities that promote the good and bring out the good," said Hull.
The program engages the kids in a fun and physical way while also teaching them life lessons and valuable communication skills. @
But the horses aren't the only animals students can learn from at Sierra Rose Farms.
"If someone's nervous they can start with the kittens and hold and pet the cat and that builds confidence to work with the horses," said Hull, "They want to do good, they want to apply themselves and because our atmosphere is so positive, they're given the ability."
It's an ability they'll hopefully keep with them for the rest of their lives. If you'd like more information on getting involved with the Healing with Horses program or to set-up a school visit, contact Sierra Rose Farms at 517-668-0057.
