A Livingston county grandmother is accused of child abuse and torture.
Back in October a 3-year-old Livingston county toddler was taken to the hospital with more than 60 different injuries.
Friday afternoon, following a three month investigation, detectives from the Livingston County Sheriff's Department arrested 34-year-old Sara Walters-- the boy's step-grandmother.
Walters had custody of the three year old and his twin brother.
Back in October when their mother came to visit she noticed the injuries on the boy and took him to the hospital.
Police say those injuries showed a continuous cycle of abuse and torture but they say the three-year-old's brother appeared untouched and in good health.
It's a case police say just doesn't add up.
Livingston County Sheriff Bob Bezotte has been in law enforcement for nearly 40 years, he says this case is unlike anything he's ever seen.
Bezotte: "It was just an unbelievable case of torture and abuse...we had contusions and bruising throughout the entire body from head to toe."
Bezotte says the abuse left much more than superficial bruises.
Bezotte: "His penis had damage on it, his rectum, they had tried to penetrate his rectal area."
When he arrived at the hospital the three year old's body temperature was just 88 degrees--
a result, Bezotte says, of forcing the boy into an ice water bath.
Bezotte: "When we interviewed her and talked to her about the various injuries she had excuses of ya know, him falling down and none of this made sense, none of it matched up to the injuries obviously and she had excuse after excuse...it's just unbelievable that anybody could do this to a baby."
At this point Sarah Walters is in the Livingston County Jail.
Her bond was set at $200,000.
As for the boy, police say he's doing much better.
He and his brother are in the care of child protective services.
