Parents Sound Off on Proposed District Restructuring

Parents sound off on plans to reconfigure the Lansing School District.

At Otto Middle School on Thursday night the discussion centered on the proposed changes to schools on the north side.

Those changes include a proposal to close Willow Elementary and reconfigure Otto as a 4th through 8th grade school.

But it seems the plan is going to be a tough sell to the public

Many say if the district continues with the plans for reconfiguration--
they're out.

Parent: "I'm just very sad that LSD is considering doing something like this! I really believe that you are going to lose a lot of students."

Those who aren't threatening to leave are worried about what happens when you put 4th graders together with 8th graders.

Parent: "One of the biggest concerns that I have is how is the Lansing school board or district prepared to protect young kids from bullying from older students."

Board members understand that, President, Myra Ford says she'd like to take a closer look at creating some 4th thru 6th grade schools instead-- as proposed for the south side.

Myra Ford, School Board President: "It may be that wouldn't be possible to do because of the number of students we have but we do want to have those questions answered for us too."

Ford went on to say: "I think sometimes people think that we don't care about the children and we don't care about the students, we care about nothing more than them."

Now its just deciding what really is best for them.

The district will hold another public hearing at Pattengill Middle School on February 15th at 6:30.
