Two People Charged In Child Shooting Incident

Two people face charges in connection with a shooting that injured a child last week.

But it's not the person who pulled the trigger who faces the more serious ones.

It all stems from a shooting Friday morning in Lansing.

Police originally said a man with a gun had pulled the trigger and wounded a child.

Prosecutors believe that to be the case. But they say that only happened after a woman stalked the man, threatened him, harassed him, contacted him illegally, and finally rammed her vehicle into a car he was sitting in.

Ingham County Prosecutor Stuart Dunnings says the man apparently fired a gun not to hurt anyone, but to fend the woman off. Still, he says using the gun to defend himself wasn't appropriate for the level of the threat.

The man now faces one count of "careless discharge of a firearm causing injury."

The woman, however, is in much more trouble. She faces one count of aggravated stalking - two counts of felonious assault (because two people were in the car she's accused of ramming), and three counts of child abuse (because she had three kids in the car with her when it happened).

"It is certainly a sad day when a child is injured after being placed in harm's way by adults," said Dunnings in a press release. "Our office alleges that both of these persons violated the law, and we will prosecute these charges in the Michigan courts."

Their names have not been released because they have not been formally charged.
