Jackson Authorities Request ATF Agent

Posted:

Authorities in Jackson could get some federal help to crack down on violent crimes. Leaders in the police and sheriff's department have asked for an ATF agent to be stationed in the city.

For the past ten years, there hasn't been a federal presence within Jackson law enforcement. Something leaders say has had an impact on the area, which is why they're asking to get it back.

"They would work in collaboration with the major crimes task force to target specific crimes, specific criminals, that we would like to get off the streets, and help clean up the streets in Jackson," said Steven Rand, Jackson County Sheriff.

So far this year there have been a handful of cases where the FBI got involved. Sheriff Rand says that shows having an agent here full, or even part time, will help crack down on other serious crimes involving drugs and guns.

"When you bring in somebody from the federal side, or state federal, it doesn't matter, they always have a different perspective, and there are different assets available to them. Whether it be with actual physical resources like equipment, and also with technical knowledge, we all have something to offer, and I would like that federal component to be here as well," said Rand.

Jackson Police are also on board and both departments have offered up office space.

"We want those people to be players, and we want to collaborate with those folks, and have them involved in the process of prosecuting these crimes. It's just something that makes sense. And I think it's important we engage our federal partners," said Rand.

The sheriff and police chief has sent a formal letter to representative Tim Walberg requesting a federal agent. Now it's just a waiting game to see if that is accepted.
