Local Businesses See Big Sales for Valentine's Day

It's that time of year again, Valentine's Day, where its all about love.

But for some local businesses it's also about money and many say they're seeing stronger sales this year than they have in the past.

Madeline Blair knows candy.

Blair: "Valentine's day is probably my favorite holiday."

She's co-owner at Fabiano's Candy where last minute shoppers pack the room.

Blair: "People buying candy are generally happy people and its just a fun holiday, its chaos for a few days and then its over with."

But that chaos also means cash.

Blair: "I would say its running probably 30 to 40 dollars a person."

And from chocolate roses to real ones, its the same story just down the street at Bancroft Flowers."

Ruth Leyrer, Owner: "Oh man, I am tired!"

Owner Ruth Leyrer has been busy all day arranging flowers and helping some clueless guys along the way.

Patrick Barner, Shopper: "I pretty much just took the workers word for it, I don't know flowers that's a girl thing."

So what's the average person spending?

Leyrer: "Well I just made a bouquet for a gentleman that was 150 dollars so average id say probably about 60 or 75 dollars."

Sarah Sivers, Shopper: "We don't usually spend very much, its just kind of about spending time together."

Whether its about spending time together or spending money on roses and truffles, one thing is for sure: Love is in the air.

A survey by the National Retail Federation shows, on average, men spend about 170 dollars on Valentines gifts.
