State Lawmakers Meet With MSU Officials About New Health Care Policy

Posted:

Michigan State University officials are expected to testify Wednesday morning in a hearing with state lawmakers over the school's mandatory health care insurance policy.

Lawmakers say the requirement could potentially keep students away from pursing a higher education, because it raises the cost of college by thousands of dollars which can put a burden on working families in this tough economy.

Under the new policy, fall 2011 students and new students must have their own health insurance or be automatically enrolled in the university-sponsored health care insurance plan which costs roughly $1,500 dollars a year.

6 News talked with MSU spokesperson Kent Casella last week about the price of the policy. He said the plan ensures student health and academic success. "The fact that we made this a requirement, they can roll this into their financial aide package. It enables them to be able to manage those costs and still get the care they need," said Casella.

Officials told 6 News students still have the choice to opt out of the school's health insurance plan, but the deadline to do so is February 29.
