Officials Say Lansing Promise Scholarship Is Ready To Go

The future of a new casino in downtown Lansing is still uncertain, but a plan that would allow every Lansing High School graduate to have the option to go to college for free is certain.

The Lansing Promise Scholarship is set to kick-off for the first time this fall. But it's going to be up to the people of Lansing to make this a reality.

If you've ever dreamed that your child could be sitting in a classroom at Lansing Community College or walking through campus on their way to class at Michigan State University, the Promise Zone Authority Board promises they can make that happen.

"We should be educating our children, we should not have barriers... and money to afford to go to college should not be a barrier for children," said Linda Lee Tarver, Promise Zone board member.

Starting this fall money won't be a barrier because every graduating high school senior in Lansing will have the option to go to LCC for free or attend MSU with a $5,000 scholarship.

"That's a guarantee. We believe in this very strongly, we've seen the tremendous impact that guarantee college scholarship programs are having across the country," said Kellie Dean, Lansing Promise authority chair.

The board is confident they'll have the $800,000 needed to fund the program for the first year, but they need your help to keep the program going.

"Our goal is to raise $5 million that will be raised individually, corporately," said Dean.

If the Kewadin Casino came to Lansing it would bring $6 million to the Lansing Promise fund.

"We're not counting on any casino dollars to start our program, and for the next few years. If the casino project was to become successful in the future, that will only help to further enhance," said Dean.

"We are ready to rock and roll this year, we're ready to make the promise and keep the promise this year," said Tarver.
