One person is dead after an Amtrak train heading from Chicago to Port Huron struck a car on Millet Highway in Delta Township.
Authorities have identified the victim as 39-year-old Hermes Fernandez-Lopez of Lansing.
The driver of the car was killed on the scene after officials say he drove around the gates at the railroad crossing.
Police say the crash happened about 9:10 p.m. Thursday night. About 120 passengers were on the train at the time but police say no one was injured.
School buses transported passengers to their destinations.
"The train was coming, we believe, from the Chicago area and they collided. Not sure what the car was, struck by the train for almost a mile of travel, after that...not much left of the car," said Fire Chief John Clark, Delta Township Fire Department.
A spokesperson with M-Dot says the lights and railroad crossing gates were working properly at the time of the crash.
This is the second accident this month involving an Amtrak train. Back on February 1 a passenger train collided with a semi-truck in Jackson County.
Several people suffered minor injuries, including the truck driver.
