Interim-Superintendent Ready To Step Up To The Plate

Posted:

It's a tough job, but the Lansing School District's new interim superintendent is ready to step-up to the plate.

There are some big changes on the way for the Lansing School District. Thursday night the school board voted in a new interim-superintendent after voting to put T.C.  Wallace on paid administrative leave.

The new interim-superintendent, Yvonne Caamal Canul has three priorities she'd like to focus on during her time in the office. She says it's going to be a challenge, but one she's ready and excited for.

Caamal Canul is no stranger to the district.

"I love Lansing, I really can say that. It has a great school district, it has great potential," said Caamal Canul.

She would know, she's spent the last three and a half decades in education, including 27 years in Lansing.

In less than 24 hours Caamal Canul already has a plan in place for what she hopes to accomplish. First priority, the budget.

"What's the budget look like, what do we have, what do we need, what are we lacking in terms of financial resources, what is the revenue stream look like?" said Caamal Canul.

Her second priority is staffing. With 85 percent on the budget being personal, Caamal Canul says she'll be looking to see if the district has too much or to little and if they're in the right positions.

Thirdly, she wants to look at restructuring.

"It's really hard to think about restructuring if you really don't know what kind of budget your dealing with, and what restructuring you need to do in order to balance the budget. So I see all 3 of these as being the major work for the next few months," said Caamal Canul.

By then, perhaps a permanent superintendent will be in place, someone Caamal Canul hopes understands where education is going on a national platform and with instructional leadership and vision that will help Lansing get back on top where it once was.

"It's a great city, there's great energy in this city, I kind of want to be a part of the resurgence," said Caamal Canul.

She officially takes over as interim-superintendent on March 1.
