Lansing Woman Helps Military Families With New Book

A local author hopes she can make the lives of military families easier, one book at a time.  Kimberly Suchek started a new chapter in her life when she married her husband, Steven, 13 years ago.  But she soon learned that being married to an Army National Guard soldier is anything by easy.

"It's not the white picket fence, the dog, the 2.2 kids. We have to go through a lot of stuff that people don't understand," Suchek said.

Being deployed for a year at a time, Kim and her daughter were left to deal with the house, the finances and the emotional stress of "not knowing," and she says the problems don't go away when Steven comes home.

"The re-integration process is really, really hard. A lot of what they go through, they can't talk about when they come home. A lot of it is because they don't want to, a lot of it is because they can't talk about it. So, when they have sorrow and things that they go through, it's extremely hard."

But it doesn't have to be so hard for everybody. That's why Kim decided to write a book to help families dealing the same issues. It's called OPERATION: Military Resources.  Inside it has links to more than 1,500 organizations, programs, discounts, and scholarships. She says it's everything a military family needs to know, and where to find it.

"You don't have to be alone. You are never alone. You just need to know where to look and get the support. Its not all about financial assistance or anything like that, it's being able to talk to somebody that can relate, reflect and understand what you're going though."
