Local Woman Works To "Stop The Violence"

Posted:

A young man shot Monday in Lansing has died and police are still looking for the suspects in the murder.

It happened around 2:30 Monday afternoon. Lansing police responded to a call reporting gun shots in the 4300 block of Glenburne.

When they got there, they found 20-year-old Frank Cunningham critically wounded.

He was taken to a local hospital where he died early Tuesday morning. This marks the third homicide in Lansing this year and some are working to make it the last.

Frank Cunningham was shot on the city's southside in broad daylight. Police say there was some kind of confrontation with Cunningham and the suspect right before he was shot.

"We also know this is not a random act," said Officer Robert Merritt, LPD.

The sad ending to Cunningham's life is a story Rina Risper is all too familiar with. Risper has been working to Stop the Violence in Lansing. Since November she has held events and rallies where hundreds of people have shown up. It's an ongoing battle, but well worth the fight. @

"We're working on many pieces at one time, which means it's going to take a little longer for us to even start focusing on fixing something," said Risper.

Risper says it's all about prevention and making resources and opportunities available to people. Risper is even talking about trying to start a gun buy back program to keep guns off the streets and out of the wrong hands.

"We have to look for opportunities to make this work," said Risper.

While Risper knows the violence won't stop in a day or a month, for her, doing something is better than nothing.

"At the end of the day our goal is to make Lansing a more peaceful place so people don't have to live in fear that a crime may happen next door," said Risper.

In the latest murder police say they're looking for a gold or tan colored car that's about 10 years old. It has two hubcaps missing on the passengers side. Two men were in the car when it sped off.

If you have any information on the shooting you're asked to call Crime Stoppers or the Lansing Police Department.
